Piyush Chaudhary*, Neha Lamba and Vidushi Tyagi

ABSTRACT

The incidence of diabetes mellitus is increasing rapidly because of the changes in dietetic habits and life style. Continuous research is being done by scientists from various fields in order to achieve an effective cure for the disease. A great deal of work has also been done by Ayurvedic research scholars on various herbal and mineral drugs to find an effective treatment for Diabetes mellitus. Searching across the Ayurvedic texts one can find several different types of dosage formulations for the management of diabetes. The brihatrayi and laghutrayi form the basis of Ayurvedic texts which are a treasure of ancient wisdom and therapeutics. One has to dive deep in to these varied texts to obtain the knowledge of Ayurvedic management of diseases. The present literary review was conducted to explore and find out the different formulations for Prameha which have been mentioned in the Ayurveda texts compiled during medieval era. The study included the texts of Bhavprakash, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and sharangdhar samhita. These texts were studied thoroughly and drugs were sorted out on the basis of their type of dosage form viz. kashaya, vati, churna, ras preparations and single drug therapy. All the formulations were also analysed for their main constituents which could possibly explain their probable mode of action as per basic principles of Ayurveda.

Keywords: Ayurveda, Diabetes mellitus, Prameha.
