ABSTRACT

The transdermal patches are innovative drug delivery system which overcome the problems arises from conventional dosage forms. The transdermal therapeutic system provide for continous drug release into the systemic circulation through the intact skin during a prolong time at predetermined rate. The purpose of the present research was to formulate transdermal patches of Cyproheptadine hydrochloride using polymers: Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose E5 (HPMC E5), Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose E15 (HPMC E15). Glycerin is used as plasticizer and PEG 400 is used as permeation enhancer. The prepared patches were found to be satisfactory in terms of physicochemical properties like Appearance, thickness, pH, weight variation, folding endurance, drug content. Drug – Excipient interaction studies were carried out using FTIR technique. The formulated patches were subjected to stability studies for a period of three month. The results indicated that there was no appreciable change in their physical parameters and drug content.

Keywords: Transdermal patches, Cyproheptadine hydrochloride, First pass metabolism, Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose E5, Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose E15.
