ABSTRACT
Background: Currently, there is no proven medical treatment against SARS-CoV-2, the virus liable for Covid-19. Since many herbs exhibit antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it may be favorable to consider them for the prevention of COVID-19. Holistic approach of AYUSH consists of prevention from disease through lifestyle modification, dietary management and prophylactic interventions by improving the immunity of an individual. With this purview present study was conducted with main objective to assess the prophylactic role of AYUSH interventions in prevention of COVID-19. Method: High risk persons which include the family members of COVID positive patients (home-isolated or admitted at hospital) and health workers were given either Ayurvedic, Homoeopathic or Unani prophylactic medicines for 14 days and were observed till one month in AYUSH department of GTBH, AYUSH Unit. The AYUSH prophylactic medicines were used according to the guidelines of Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India. Those people were included in the study who were willing to take prophylactic medicines after taking verbal consent. Sanshamni vati, khamira Marwareed and Arsenic album30 was given as prophylactic regimen in the prescribed doses to 1200 participants but 1179 framed the final sample size. Data was recorded on Excel sheet and analyzed by Graphpad statistical tool. Result: Out of 1179 participants only sixteen turned positive which account to less than 1.5% of the total sample size. Analysis of prophylactic role of AYUSH interventions in prevention of COVID-19 was done using ANOVA test and it was found statistically significant P < .0001. Conclusion: AYUSH systems of medicine can play an integral role in prevention of COVID-19 and it is evident from the study that AYUSH interventions decreased the incidence of COVID -19 and also by increasing the immunity of the individual, prevented spread and severity of the disease.
