ABSTRACT

Azetidinone, a β-lactam four member heterocyclic compound involved in research aimed to evaluate new products that possess interesting biological activities. These compounds reported for their antimicrobial and antifungal activities. Successful introduction of aztreonam as a potent inhibitor of cephalosporinase and ezetimibeas a cholesterol absorption inhibitor proved potential of 2-azetidinonemoiety. The Schiff’s base, an azomethine, has a wide range of applications as antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and antiviral Agents. The synthesis of novel Schiff’s bases and their utility to develop a variety of heterocycles of pharmacological importance is one of the currently interesting areas of research Subsequently 2-azetidinones were highlighted as a potent mechanism based inhibitor of several enzymes like human tryptase, chymase, thrombin, leukocyte elastase, human cytomegalovirus protease and serine protease enzyme. These derivatives also known to possess antitubercular, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, anti-HIV, antiparkinsonian, antidiabetic and vasopressin V1a antagonist activity. The present review article focuses on the pharmacological profile of 2-azetidinones with their potentialactivities. A variety of azetidinones were synthesized by the cyclocondensation of azolylindolyl schiff’s bases with mercaptoacetic acid and chloro acetyl chloride, respectively under ultrasonication. The methoxy substituted thiazolylindolyl azetidinone and imidazolylindolyl azetidinone were exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against B. subtilis. The compounds also showed excellent antifungal activity against A. niger. The chemistry of β-lactams has taken an restigious place in organic and medicinal chemistry so the review on recent methods in the synthesis of 2-Azetidinone derivatives rendered as a lead molecule for designing potential bioactive agents and it accompanying additional various synthetic information and its orientations would encompass great deal of help to researchers, chemists and pharmacologists to make it the best, most productive, economical and medicinal important compounds which will be expected to show potent pharmacological activities. In future it Synthesssis, Characterization and Anti-Microbial Evaluation of Azetidinone would be useful to design different new drugs to bring in the market by using rapid, operationally simple, efficient and green procedure. This has led to the discovery of a wide variety of compounds that are of high interest from the point of view antibacterial, anti- inflammatory, antihyperlipidemic, CNS activity, anticancer, antimicrobial, pesticidal, cytotoxic, antidiabetic, antitumor, antifungal, antitubercular activities.

Keywords: antidiabetic, antitumor, antifungal, antitubercular activities.
