Abstract

AN AYURVEDIC PROTOCOL FOR MANAGEMENT OF SHEETADA W. S. R. TO GINGIVITIS

ABSTRACT

Major health problem seen all around world is oral disease. In Ayurveda as per Susrutha Samhitha Sheethada, is one of Dantamoolagata (Periodontal) disorder under the classification of Mukha roga (Oral diseases) Sheetada occurs due to vitiation of Kapha and Rakta dosha and can be correlated with marginal gingivitis on the basis of similarities of symptoms, involvement of anatomical structure, etiology and prognosis. Though Sheetada begins in early childhood prevalence is higher among the elders. Aim: This study was focused to evaluate the effectiveness of Naagaradi Gandoosha (Gargle) and Priyanguvadi prathisarana (Massage or rub on the gums with mechanical pressure exerted in a specific direction with herbal powder) mentioned in dantamoolaroga chikitsa of chakradatta for the management of Sheetada. Materials and Methods: The subject approached the department of Shalakya Tantra opd of government Ayurvedic medical college Bengaluru. Patient was treated with Priyanguvadi pratisarana followed by Naagaradi Gandoosha Rakthasrawa (Bleeding gums), Krishnatha (Discoloration), Shotha (Edema), Mukha daurgandhya (halitosis), Mrudutha (Spongy gums), Prakledatha (Moistness) were considered as subjective criteria and as objective criteria improvement of Gingival Index, Gingival halitosis index, plaque index were studied before and after treatment. Statistically, Rakthasrava, Krishnatha, Shotha, Mukha Daurgandhya, Mrudutha were significantly reduced in 1st follow up as compare Gingival Index, and Gingival halitosis Index and plaque index were reduced in 2nd follow up. Follow up study further confirmed that the recurrence rate was significantly lower.
