ABSTRACT

In the study Erythrina indica leaves were evaluated for the treatment of glaucoma. Belonging to the family Fabaceae said plant was claimed to be useful in various ophthalmic purposes, but the anti-glaucomatous activity has not been scientifically validated. Phytochemical screening revealed phytoconstituents namely flavanoids, alkaloids, steroids, carbohydrates, Terpenoids and Phenols were present. In-vitro studies were performed by using various methods such as haemolytic assay, tryphan blue cytotoxicity test and anti-choline esterase activity. Based on this, the ethanolic extract of Erythrina indica was selected for in-vivo studies. Carbomer induced glaucoma in rabbit model, showed desirable changes in IOP. Test drug (0.02mg/ml Ethanolic extract of Erythrina indica) produced anti-glaucomatous effect in both Haemolytic assay and tryphan blue cytotoxicity. From studies, it is concluded that Erythrina indica as eye drops (2%) possess considerable Anti glaucomatous Activity.
