Abstract

BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SOME CHALCONE DERIVATIVES FOR ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY

Deepa Gupta*

ABSTRACT

In present scenario of COVID-19, search for new antimicrobial agent has become need of the hour. Chalcones are a promising template for optimization of antibacterial activity against Gram positive organisms. Synthesis of Chalcone derivatives was carried out by Claisen –Schmidt condensation of the appropriate aldehyde and ketone derivatives. A large series of chalcones were synthesized and structure was confirmed by spectral analysis. The newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity of Chalcone was evaluated with the agar dilution method by using Sabouraud agar. These newly synthesized chalcones were studied for antibacterial activity against drug sensitive strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. These compounds had no activity against E. coli, while showed good activity against Staphylococcus aureus. As regards to the relationship between the structure and the detected antibacterial activity, the inhibitory effect appears to be related to the substituent of Chalcone.

Keywords: Chalcones; Claisen – Schmidt condensation; Antibacterial activity; Staphylococcus aureus.
