ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic Musculo-Skeletal pain is one of the most intractable clinical problem faced by clinicians and can be devastating for patients. So, we are in need of urgency in developing new treatment strategies and is our utmost priority. We aim to conduct a study to assess the comparative analgesic effect of Tramadol-ER Versus Tapentadol- ER in the management of Musculo-Skeletal Pain. Methods: The study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Each patient was provided with a written informed consent and patient acceptance was obtained, typically belonging to 18 & above age group. This was a Prospective Observational Study. The total sample size is around 150 patients who fulfil the inclusion criteria were selected for the study and was divided into two groups – Group-I (75) under treatment with Tapentadol-ER and Group-II (75) under treatment with Tramadol-ER. Both Group-I and Group-II were given 50mg twice-a-day(BD) and the Pain intensity can be assessed by using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after the test drugs administration over a period of 6 months. Possible side effects are recorded, which are reported by the patients of either group during the study period and the drug safety, tolerance, dependence or addiction were assessed. Results: Pain reduction was higher in Group-I , on chi square test where p value is less than 0.037. Conclusion: We conclude that, from our study that both the drugs shown significant reduction in the pain intensity. Tapentadol-ER have shown better gastro intestinal tolerability profile and lower rates side effects when compared to Tramadol-ER. The pain at 2 h after the drug administration was significantly lesser in tapentadol group as compared with tramadol group.
