Joshah Varghese*, Sruthi M., Anna Febin Francis and Saranya K. G.

ABSTRACT

The present study is used to carry out the formulation and evaluation of levofloxacin loaded chitosan nanoparticle ointment, Nanoparticle is used to improve the delivery of drug through the skin and improve the sustained release efficacy, Sustained drug delivery of levofloxacin preparation can be helpful to manage and conserve effective drug concentration, reduces the dosing time intervals and decreases side effects. Chitosan has been used as the polymer in this study. Chitosan nanoparticle was prepared by using ionotropic gelation method using chitosan and sodium tri polyphosphate. The developed nanoparticle were evaluated by FT-IR, SEM, drug entrapment efficiency, drug release study. The antibacterial activity of the 3 formulations showed good result, the nanoparticle ointment prepared by using formulation 3 (F3) was evaluated by pH, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, invitro release study, and all these studies showed good result. The antimicrobial study of formulated ointment showed good zone of inhibiton.

Keywords: Levofloxacin, Chitosan nanoparticle, Ionotropic gelation method, Antibacterial ointment, Staphylococcus aureus.
