ABSTRACT

The most comfortable and choicely drug delivery system is microsphere and floating microsphere is one of the best microspheres which bring a revolution in novel drug delivery system. Hypertension is a long-term increase in blood pressure that causes end-organ damage as well as increased morbidity and death. Floating microspheres are non-effervescent drug delivery methods that are gastro-retentive with a diameter ranges from 1m to 1000m. The bulk density is less than 1 gm/cm[3] i.e., lower than the gastric fluid. So, the floating microspheres are float over the gastric medium and retain in the stomach for prolong period of time. The main advantages of floating microspheres are Patient compliance improves as the frequency of dose is reduced, buoyancy of floating microspheres increases gastric retention time, enhanced the bioavailability of the drug etc. The drawbacks of floating microspheres are it does not allow chewing or crushing of dosage form and drug release influenced by pH of gastric fluid, gastric motility and food present in stomach Sufficient amount of water is required for floating microspheres to float over gastric fluid. The different method of preparation of floating microspheres are involved Solvent evaporation method, polymerization method, double emulsion method, single emulsion method, Ionotropic gelation method etc. In this present review article different types pf method of preparation of floating microspheres and different types of antihypertensive drugs and their mechanism of action are discussed. Different types of drugs, their category and brand name which are used for treatment of hypertension are also included.

Keywords: Hypertension, Floating microspheres, Gastric fluid, Bioavailability.
