Abstract

A REVIEW ON NANOEMULSION AS AN ADVANCED TRANSDERMAL DELIVERY SYSTEM

Ajeesh Krishnan V. P.*, Shabaraya A. R. and Vinayak K.

ABSTRACT

Nanoemulsions are extremely small formulations compared to micro emulsions, and they are a type of advanced drug delivery system capable of achieving high bioavailability for poorly absorbable drugs. By using an appropriate surfactant, co surfactant, two immiscible liquids were mixed to create a single phase, which is thermodynamically stable. The droplet sizes of nanoemulsions are generally ranges from 20-200nm and this smaller droplet nano sized form helps this particular dosage form to bypass transdermal route efficiently. Because of the limited droplet scale of nanoemulsion formulations, problems like creaming, coalescence sedimentation, and flocculation are less noticeable. This review is generally focused on aspects of transdermal delivery, methods of preparations, evaluation parameters and the techniques which are utilized for the preparation of nanoemulsions are solvent evaporation method, ultrasofication, sonification, microfluidization, high pressure homogenization and evaluation parameter that are performed for its characterization are droplet size analysis, viscosity determination, refractive index, thermal stability, zeta potential, pH, Transmission electron microscopy, drug content, and in vitro skin permeation study.

Keywords: Nanoemulsion, Transdermaldelivery, Nanometer, Bioavailability.
