Abstract

ANXIOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC LEAVES EXTRACT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM IN ALBINO WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

The anxiolytic activity of ocimum sanctum leaf (200.400mg/kg) extract was monitored using the Elevated plus maze method taking Diazepam(2mg/kg) as the standard.It was observed that the leaf extract decreased the elevated levels ,significantly when compared to the standard (p<0.001), The cxtract showed asignificant increase in the number of open arm entries and also decreased the time spent in the closed arm (p<0.001).Thus the result suggest that the methanolic leaf extract of ocimum sanctum is a reliable anxiolytic agent.
