ABSTRACT
Shwasa roga is a respiratory disease mentioned in Ayurvedic texts. The provoked Vata enters the Pranavaha Strotasa gets vitiated and rouses up the Kapha present in the Uraha. Obstruction of the Pranavayu and Strotovaigunya produces Shwasa. As per modern medicine Shwasa may be correlated with Asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease of respiratory system. The prevalence of asthma has been estimated to range between 3% - 38% in children and 2% - 12% in adults. The inflammation of the airway, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and intermittent airflow obstruction are pathophysiological features of asthma. Antigen antibody complex attachment to the mast cell causes
its disruption releasing inflammatory mediators like histamine. To evaluate the efficacy of anti-asthmatic property of a drug, assessment of mast cell stabilizing, anti-histaminic and bronchodilator property can be used as pharmacodynamic parameter. Ayurveda is highly effective in treating many chronic diseases like Shwasa. Thus an attempt has been made to evaluate the probable efficacy of polyherbal Simhyadi Kwatha mentioned in Yogratnakar Vol 2, Shwasa rogadhikar in treating Shwasa.
