INSULIN LIKE GROWTH FACTOR(IGF) WITH FIBROID
*Dr. Israa Raad Abdulaali, Dr. Eaman Chaffat Karawan and Dr. Zainab Abdulhadi Mohammed Al-Asadi
ABSTRACT Uterine leiomyomata, commonly called fibroids, are the leading indication for hysterectomy in the United States.[1] The condition is especially common for blacks, a group with estimated cumulative hysterectomy rates for fibroids of 20% by age 45.[2] Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumors of clonal origin.[3] Incidence increases with age from menarche to perimenopausal ages.[4] Both estrogen and progesterone may stimulate their development. Although the mechanisms by which these hormones influence tumor onset and progression is not well understood (reviewed in Schwartz and Marshall[5]), their actions are mediated at least in part by growth factors.
