ABSTRACT

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive disorder seen in the age group of 65 years or more. Disease characterized by decline in cognitive function such as reduction in memory, thinking, language and learning capacity. AD is normally differentiated from other age related disorders affecting the downturn in cognitive function which is more gradual and associated with less disabilities. Disease mainly characterized by dementia which causes to lose their ability at different rates. AD starts with mild symptoms and end with severe brain damage. Main causes of AD includes acetylcholine deficiency, increased free radicals and inflammation of the brain tissues. Drugs used to treat AD, is mainly concerned with slow down of the disease progression but it pocess several central and peripheral side effects, insomnia etc. Here arises the demand for new and safer drugs from natural sources. Terminalia bellerica Roxb. (Combretaceae) is a commonly used plant containing various phytoconstituents like glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compound, aminoacids and saponins which are liable for various pharmacological activities. Main objective of this study is to establish the anti – Alzheimer’s disease activity of methanolic fruit extract of leaves of Terminalia Billerica by using various invitro methods. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity is the major test was done to prove antialzhemer’s activity using Donepezil as the standard. Then anti-oxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging activity tests as ascorbic acid as reference. It’s activity was evaluated by IC50 value obtained by each test. And it was compared with the standard drug.

Keywords: Alzhemer’s disaease; Terminalia bellirica; Acetylcholinesterase; Anti-oxidant activity.
