Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF UTILIZATION PATTERN OF CARDIOVASCULAR DRUGS USING WHO PRESCRIBING INDICATORS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most concerning in developing countries. Following the essential medicines list helps to increases the rationality of the therapy and provides patient safety. ATC/DDD system serves as a tool for drug utilization monitoring and research in order to improve the safety and quality of drug use. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carrying out with 100 patients to describe the current prescribing trend. Microsoft tools and SPSS 20.0 statistical software wasutilize for data analysis. Results: Out of the 100 prescriptions analyzed, 665 drugs wereprescribed and among which 488 drugs were prescribe by generic name. Out of total drugs, 580 drugs werefrom the essential drug list. Aspirin, Ramipril, Digoxin, Pantoprazole, Amlodipine, Streptokinase, Telmisartan had the PDD/DDD ratio that equals 1. Conclusion: The study concludes that the maximum number of drugs was prescribed according to National List of Essential Medicines. Poly-pharmacy was the most commonly found, which affects the quality of life of the patients.
