Abstract

IN-VITRO ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTICANCER ACTIVITY OF OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT

Mohie Hafez, Magdy Youssef and Amr Negm*

ABSTRACT

Natural antioxidants are broadly spread in fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants which have a wide range of effects in our bodies and cells of living things, including anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerosis and anticancer. The current study was done to find out the antioxidant activity of olive leaf extract as well as its anticancer effect on liver cancer which is the sixth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. The antioxidant activity of OLE was inspected via DPPH, ABTS, GPX, and SOD-like activity assays. Further more, the anticancer activity was evaluated using viability assay (MTT assay) on hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2 for OLE and its combination with the standard chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin. OLE showed powerful radical scavenging capacities for DPPH and ABTS radicals as well as revealed SOD and GPx like activity. Also, OLE exhibited a highly cytotoxic effect on HepG2 and exhibited considerable improvement in the anticancer effect of doxorubicin. Current results find out that Olive leaf extract had a powerful antioxidant property and caused a high synergistic effect with doxorubicin against liver cancer.

Keywords: OLE, HCC, GPC-3, MTT assay; HepG2.
