Abstract

A REVIEW ON BHOOTA BHAIRAVA GHRITA - AN AYURVEDIC FORMULATION USED IN PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda elaborates the social, longest and spiritual aspect of life. The equilibrium of health is achieved by the proper acquaintance of Tridosha (Vata Pitta and Kaapha Doshas), Sapta Dahatu (Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja and Shukra), Trimalas(Purisha, Mutra and Sweda) and proper co-ordinate with sense organs and Manas. Here the Manas refers the mind. The clarity of the mind is achieved by the balance in the Satva, Raja and Tama Gunas. The imbalance in these three qualities lead to psychological as well as somatic diseases. In Ayurveda the psychological disorders refers to Manasa Rogas. Viz; Unmada, Apasmara, Chittodvega, Atatvabhinivesha, Griha Dosha, Vishada, etc. This imbalance in the attributes leads to Dhi, Dhriti and Smriti Vibhramsha ie the mind unable to recognize the what is good and what is bad. It rounds in a delusional states. To attain the Samyak Jnana (Correct perception). Ayurveda enumerated various kinds of formulations. In these formulations most of them are Ghrita (Medicated ghee) preparations. Because the Ghrita crosses the blood brain barrier, and gives the desired effect. Among these Ghrita preparation the Bhoota Bhairava Ghrita is used by our ancestors. The main ingredients of these Ghrita are; Trikatu (Maricha, Pippali, Shunthi), Dala (Tamala Patra), Kumkuma (Kesara), Granthika (Pippalimoola), Yavakshara, Brihati, Kntakari, Nisha(Haridra), Devadaru, Shweta Sarshapa and Black Sarshapa, Sugandhabala, Indrayava, Shweta Chandana, Lashuna, Triphala (Haritaki, Vibhitaki, Amalaki), Ushira, Katuki, Vacha, Tuthya, Yasthimadhu, Bala, Manjistha, Ela, Manashila, Padmaka, Dadhi, Tagara, Madhukasara (The internal part of the red colour of th heartwood of the Madhuka), Priyangu, white variety of Ativisha, Visha (Black variety of Ativisha), Rasanjana, Chavya, Kustha. The Medicated ghee is prepared and the ghee must be one year old. The prepared Ghrita is administered with milk and also administered as Nasya (through nasal route). Here an attempt is made to highlight the formulation, ingredients, their botanical source, preparation, its administration. The Bhoota Bhairava Ghrita is advised to consume daily with warm milk to avoid psychological disorders.
