REVIEW ON COLON TARGETED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT
The oral route of drug administration is one of the most widely used route of administration of drugs meant for systemic effect. But for drug meant for lower gastrointestinal disease, it is not considered because of the early release of drug in stomach, small intestine resulting in minimizing the availability of drug at lower GI tract. For this problem, targeted drug delivery into the colon is used. In colon targeted drug delivery, a drug is made resistant to its degradation in upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract and then its abrupt or controlled release is checked in the colon. This review article discusses introduction, advantages & disadvantages of colon targeted drug delivery, anatomy of colon, factor affecting Colon Targeted Drug Delivery System, approaches and evaluation of colon targeting.
