ABSTRACT

The main aim of a drug delivery system is to bring about the desired concentration of a drug in blood or tissue, which is therapeutically effective and non-toxic. Gastro-retentive drug delivery technology is a novel drug delivery system that has been designed to retain a drug in the upper gastrointestinal tract for a prolonged period of time to allow efficient absorption. Different innovative approaches like magnetic field-assisted gastro-retention, plug type swelling system, mucoadhesion technique, floating system with or without effervescence are being applied to fabricate a Gastro-retentive drug delivery system. Among them, the Floating Drug Delivery System (FDDS) is more effective. These are drug delivery systems that float immediately upon contact with gastric fluids. They improve the bioavailability of drugs and patient compliance by increasing the gastric residence time and controlling the drug release. Gastro-retentive floating beads come under the classification of the non-effervescent type of FDDS. They are used for controlled drug delivery of drugs as they have gastro retentive properties without affecting the gastric emptying rate. This review explains briefly about the Floating Drug Delivery Systems (FDDS) and formulation and evaluation of Gastro-retentive floating beads.

Keywords: Gastro-retentive drug delivery, Floating drug delivery system, Gastro-retentive floating beads.
