Abstract

A REVIEW ON HRIDROGA AND ITS EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT THROUGH HARITAKI(TERMINALIA CHEBULA)

ABSTRACT

Hridroga is among those diseases mentioned in Ayurveda where in the description is quite brief and the Ayurvedic view point needs clarification. Hridaya (Heart) is a vital part of all human beings. Its proper functioning is the indicator of overall health and well-being. Hridroga (heart disease) has been mentioned under the “Trimarmeeya Chikitsa Adhyaya” by Acharya Charaka. There are total 107 Marmas mentioned by Acharya Charaka in Sharirsthana. Out of these Hridaya is considered as a Siramarma. As it is a Marma, the disease produced in this region is considered as a “Prananashak”. Hence it is very important to take care about the normal functioning of Hridaya. Present study is an attempt to review and collect simple and effective managements mentioned by the drug Haritaki. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) family Combretaceae is important plant used traditionally for medicinal purposes. This Drug possess properties like Deepana, Pachana, Anulomana, Gulmahara, Srothorodhahara, Hridya, and Rasayana thus it shows effective management in Hridroga. The important active constituents are hydrolysable tannins, chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid and corilagin. Animal model studies indicate, hypocholesterolemic activity, However clinical studies showed cardio protective activity. The present review reveals that these simple recipes normalize Doshas and help in preventing Hridroga.
