TOPICAL CORTICOSTEROIDS: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Topical corticosteroids are one of the most important medicines in dermatology. Due to its antinflammatory activity they are been used in the treatment of number of skin disorders like eczema, dermatitis and many other skin conditions. Topical corticosteroids are classified according to their potencies i.e. (ultra high, high, moderate, low). They are available in creams, lotions, ointments, solutions and other formulations. Topical corticosteroids show profound efficacy than the other group of drugs on different skin conditions. The use and correct strength for the patient is decided by the dermatologist on the basis of the nature, condition, age and the site of application. This review covers the history, structure, mechanism, classification, uses and side-effects of topical corticosteroids.
