EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC ACTIVITY OF BRAHMYADI GHRITA

ABSTRACT

Brahmyadi Ghrita (BG) is a polyherbal formulation; explain in ayurvedic classics to treat various CNS conditions. This study is carried out to assess antipsychotic activity of BG, Lipid soluble drugs of this formulation was extracted in Cow ghee. To assess of antipsychotic activity “5-HTP induced head twitches in mice model” and to assess extra pyramidal adverse effect “catalepsy in mice model” was used. Test drug BG was given in three dose levels X/2, X and 2X and compared with standard drug Olanzapine and Haloperidol. Goghrita was used as control and one group was used as plain control which was receiving distilled water. Antipsychotic activity study revealed statistically significant results [p<0.001] in 5-HTP induced head twitches in mice model. Catalepsy was not induced in any mouse of test drug, which is a known adverse effect of antipsychotic drugs. Thus it can be employed that BG has antipsychotic activity and it does not produce catalepsy.
