Pratik P. Terse*, Sushant P. Shetye, Arpita V. Tupe and Vanashri S. Patil.

ABSTRACT

Now a day's people are suffering from colon diseases frequently as a busy scheduled and unhygienic diet practices in their life. To treat such colonic diseases patient needs a lifelong medical attention. As a long-term use of such medication can cause some side effects and also problems like dose dumping may occur. To overcome these problems in long term medication we need a promising targeted drug delivery system which is also easy to administer. The drug delivery technology has become highly competitive and rapidly evolving with many options. More and more improvements in delivery systems are being included to optimize the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the therapy. Peptides, proteins and DNA-based therapeutics cannot be successfully delivered by conventional ways of medication. Microsponge shows controlled release of drugs onto the epidermis with assertion that the drug remains mostly localized and does not enter the systemic circulation in significant amounts. Also, the Microsponge technology offers entrapment of constituents and provides improved stability, reduced side effects, increased elegance, and enhanced formulation flexibility. In addition, various studies have confirmed that Microsponge systems are non-irritating, non-mutagenic, non-allergenic, and non-toxic. Based on these observations some scientists test this drug delivery system for the use of colon targeting for various drugs. This article reviews a detailed study about various approaches to prepare microsponge containing different drugs used for colon targetingwith their effects. Effects of different process and formulation parameters on colon targeted microsponge drug delivery system are also discussed in following article.

Keywords: Microsponges, Colon Targeted, Novel drug delivery, Eudragit.
