Mateus Silva Santos*, Maria Alice Montes de Souza, Lucas Rodrigues Sampaio and Paulo Roberto de Melo-Reis

ABSTRACT

The Brugmansia suaveolens a plant commonly found in Brazil, it is used in religious rituals, indigenous tribes and by young people in search of the potent hallucinogenic effects that it can provide. This vegetable has the ability to interact with the serotonergic and dopaminergic receptors inducing disturbing effects of the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible genotoxic/ antigenotoxic of Brugmansia suaveolens extract using the micronucleus test. We selected 48 animals of both sexes and divided into 8 groups, 3 for genotoxicity tests (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg), 3 for antigenotoxicity tests (250, 500 and 1000mg/kg) and 2 groups (negative and positive control). It was observed that the groups that received the three doses (250, 500 and 1000 mg / kg) of the solution of the plant had a higher number of micronucleus in relation to the negative control. The test dose (500 and 1000 mg / kg) of the antigenotoxicity group showed no difference in relation to the positive control. The Brugmansia suaveolens excract presented genotoxic activity at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg / kg and showed antigenotoxic activity at doses of 250 mg / kg.

Keywords: Brugmansia suaveolens, genotoxic, micronucleus, psychoactive plants.
