ABSTRACT
Background: The study entitled “Clinical Features and Contributing Factors of Cardio Embolic Stroke and their Outcome in a Tertiary Care Hospital” was carried out in 100 consecutive patients. In this study we assessed the risk factors like Atrial Fibrillation (AF), Left Ventricular Thrombus, Severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction (LVD), Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) & Myocardial Infarction (MI) and clinical features like Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), Stroke, recurrent stroke in tertiary care hospital. Method: A retrospective study was conducted for 1 year i.e., from 2019 to 2020. The outcome of this study was assessed by using modified Rankin scale (mRS) scale and National
Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scale at the time of admission and at the time of discharge. Results: Out of 100 cases, 60% of cases are valvular and non-valvular AF with Stroke, 20% of the cases are severe LV thrombus with stroke (E.F. <25%) , 10% of cases are MI with stroke, 8% of cases are LV dysfunction with stroke, 2% of the cases are other risk factors like PFO, VSD, ASD, PDA with stroke. Conclusion: we concluded that AF is more contributing to cardioembolic stroke and also associated with more disability as assessed by MRS and NIHSS scales at the time of discharge followed by severe LV dysfunction with stroke. Among these 100 patients, 50 to 70 years of age group people are more affected by the Cardio embolic stroke and females are more affected by cardioembolic stroke than males.
