Abstract

VALUATION OF IODINE CONSUMPTION AND NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT AMONG SCHOOL GOING GIRLS (6 – 12 years) OF PRAYAGRAJ DISTRICT

ABSTRACT

Iodine deficiency is one of the most important health problems in the world. It intervenes in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which carry out important functions, so that a deficit of this mineral causes alterations of different kinds such as those related to growth. Aim of the study: The objective of the present study was to know the valuation of iodine deficit in the diet of school going girls from 6 to 12 years old and their relationship with anthropometry and compare with NCHS growth standard. To assessment of the life style factor and nutrient intake was carried out through questionnaires and compare with RDA (ICMR). Method: A cross-sectional study in the age group of 6-12 years school going girls. The total sample size was 50 from Prayagraj district. General information, Nutrient intake, Life style factor and Clinical examination of the thyroid gland was done and salt samples collected for the estimation of Iodine. Result: iodine deficiency was observed which showed sign and symptoms like puffy skin, swelled body. On calculating the average daily intake of the girl respondents and comparing them with the RDA (ICMR) standards the result shows that the average daily intake of protein, iron, fat and iodine is Non significant in school going girls.
