Abstract

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF BILVA (AEGLE MARMELOS CORR.) IN IDIOPATHIC EDEMA

ABSTRACT

Background: Bilva moola (root of Aegle marmelos Corr.) is one of the ingredients of Dashamoola. Aim: Study is planned to assess efficacy of the leaves and stem bark of Bilva in idiopathic edema which can be substituted its root for its well-known Shothahara karma.Materials and Methods: Patients fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of Shotha (General edema) were selected from O.P.D. of Dravyaguna department, I.P.G.T & R.A, Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar. A detailed proforma was prepared to incorporate demographic data, all signs and symptoms of patients. Results were calculated by paired „t‟ test for parametric data while one way Annova test were used for inter group variances. Fisher LSD test was performed to find out pairwise significance. Results: The symptoms of the patients under study resembles to the symptoms of Idiopathic edema. Overall effect of Bilva root is 22.14 % while Overall effect of Bilva stem bark is 39.07 % which is significant compare to Bilva root. Overall effect of Bilva leaves 40.48% which is highly significant compare to Bilva root. Conclusion: This observation suggests that the Bilva leaf and Bilva stem bark can be used in the place of Bilva root for treating Vata-kaphaj shotha
