Abstract

SUCCESSFUL MANAGEMENT OF POST C.S. (COMPARTMENT SYNDROME) GANGRENE BY UNANI MEDICINE-A CASE STUDY

Minhaj Ahmad*

ABSTRACT

The muscle groups of the limbs are divided into sections, or compartments, formed by strong, unyielding fascial membranes. Compartment syndrome occurs due to increased intracompartmental pressure within a limited space area. Compartment Syndrome is broadly divided into two types. Acute compartment syndrome, which usually occurs after trauma, and chronic compartment syndrome, which occurs mostly in athletes. Acute compartment syndrome is a very dangerous condition and it is a surgical emergency. Most common sites of compartment syndrome are legs/forearm muscles, it may occur in the upper arm, thigh, buttock, foot, or hand. Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is a dangerous but rarely life-threatening problem. It may cause significant disability and deformity such as ischemia in the muscle and nerve, contracture, gangrene formation and sometime death if not treated in time. It requires early diagnosis and urgent management. The chronic compartment syndrome known as exertional compartment syndrome, which mainly affect athletes and is characterized by muscle pain on exercise with measured elevated pressures within affected compartments. The aim of study is to assess the efficacy of Unani formulations and local application of raw crushed papaya in the management of gangrene developed after compartment syndrome. In this study it was observed that the local application of crushed raw papaya along with leech application is very effective in the treatment of gangrene.

Keywords: Gangrene, Non healing ulcer, Unani medicine, leech therapy papaya dressing.
