Abstract

INDUCTION OF PRODUCTIVITY IN CICER ARIENTINUM BY PHOSPHATE SOLUBILIZING PSEUDOMONAS

ABSTRACT

Phosphate anions acquired by plants precipitates in soil as orthophosphate (H2PO4-1 or H2PO4-2) or is absorbed by Fe and Al oxides. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) play an important role in enhancing phosphorus availability to plants as they convert insoluble form of phosphorus into soluble one in soil and have high potential as biofertilizers. In the study under reference, the Phosphate Solubilizing Pseudomonas (PSP) used was obtained from the ICAR (Pusa), New Delhi. In terms of plant productivity, the different parameters like root and shoot length, leaf diameter and chlorophyll content of leaves of Cicer arientinum were considered and it was found out that, root lengths were increased by 11.14% and shoot lengths were increased by 32.74% with respect to control set up where PSP was not used. PSP, isolated from the biofertilizer, solubilized 380 ppm of phosphorus. On a 3 fold increase of calcium phosphate in Pikovskaya’s medium, there was an increase in both ATP (145%) and Acetyl CoA (166.66%)of bacteria, which might be due to more phosphorus uptake. The enzymes Glutathione reductase, Superoxide dismutase(SOD), Catalase(CAT) were increased by 200%, 66.66% and 94.1% respectively, mainly due to the substantial increase in growth. The outcome was also obvious due to increased accumulation of GSSG (316%) and total flavonoid (153.3%). Thus the presence of PSP not only promotes the growth of the host plant but also make the rhizosphere more productive in terms reducing oxidative stress to other friendly microbes in the vicinity. Thus a better nutrient content of gram is ensured.
