ABSTRACT
Various gastroretentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS) have been used to improve the therapeutic efficacy of drugs that have a narrow absorption window, are unstable at alkaline pH, are soluble in acidic conditions, and are active locally in the stomach. The polymers which are employed to formulate floating drug delivery systems are designed/tailored to provide drug delivery to specific region in the GIT. Recently, much attention has been focused on the use of fats and fatty acid as carriers in drug delivery systems. Numerous materials have been studied extensively in the design of drug delivery systems and one of the favored excipients is Gelucire. 43/01 grades of gelucire
on which extensive research has been published was selected for review. Hence the objective of the present manuscript is to outlines the potential applications of gelucire 43/01in the design of floating drug delivery systems.
Keywords: Floating drug delivery system, Gastroretentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS), Gelucire 43/01, bioavailability.
