SALIVA: A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

ABSTRACT
As we enter anew dawn of genomic medicine, sailochemistry will definitely play a crucial part in the early detection, monitoring as well as the progression of oral and systemic disease. The use of saliva to identify individuals with disease and to follow the progress of disease has attracted the attention of numerous investigators. It also provides a cost effective approach for screening large populations. The main reason for using saliva as a diagnostic tool is in the fact that it contains serum constituents. This review will update the clinician on recent advancements in salivary biomarkers to diagnose various autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV, oral cancer, caries etc. Lately use of saliva as a diagnostic tool is emerging as an indisputable
part in clinical dentistry mainly due to the non-invasive nature and also because of the fact that it can be collected by individuals with minimum armamentarium and modest training. This paper will give a clear cut view of the various diagnostic uses of saliva in determining the severity and progression of various systemic and oral diseases.
