Arockia Jenecius  and Veerabahu Ramasamy Mohan*

ABSTRACT

The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR) is very rich in plant diversity.
The genus Bacolepis is exclusively endemic to the NBR. Literature
survey showed that, so far Bacolepis nervosa has not been
scientifically evaluated. Hence, in this study, the phytochemicals from
the B. nervosa stem was extracted with ethanol and subjected to GCMS
analysis. The identification of components were done by
comparing the chromatogram, peak value of unknown compound with
entries in NIST database. In the GC-MS analysis, 30 bioactive
compounds were identified in the ethanol extract of stem of B.
nervosa. The prevailing components in the ethanol extract of stem
were thymol (30.47%), eugenol (9.53%), 9, 17, octadecadienal, (z)-(5.45%), piperine
(5.66%) and lupeol (2.36%). The presence of various bioactive compounds confirms the
application of B. nervosa for various ailments. However, isolation of individual
phytochemical constituent may proceed to find a novel drug or lead compound.

Keywords: Bacolepis nervosa, GC-MS analysis, bioactive compound.
