GC-MS ANALYSIS OF BIOACTIVE COMPONENTSON THE STEM EXTRACT OF BACOLEPIS NERVOSA (Wight & Arn.) Decne. ex Moq. (PERIPLOCACEAE)
Arockia Jenecius and Veerabahu Ramasamy Mohan*
ABSTRACT The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR) is very rich in plant diversity. The genus Bacolepis is exclusively endemic to the NBR. Literaturesurvey showed that, so far Bacolepis nervosa has not beenscientifically evaluated. Hence, in this study, the phytochemicals fromthe B. nervosa stem was extracted with ethanol and subjected to GCMSanalysis. The identification of components were done bycomparing the chromatogram, peak value of unknown compound withentries in NIST database. In the GC-MS analysis, 30 bioactivecompounds were identified in the ethanol extract of stem of B.nervosa. The prevailing components in the ethanol extract of stemwere thymol (30.47%), eugenol (9.53%), 9, 17, octadecadienal, (z)-(5.45%), piperine(5.66%) and lupeol (2.36%). The presence of various bioactive compounds confirms theapplication of B. nervosa for various ailments. However, isolation of individualphytochemical constituent may proceed to find a novel drug or lead compound. Keywords: Bacolepis nervosa, GC-MS analysis, bioactive compound.
