Dr. Urvashi*, Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi and Dr. Ajay Kumar Gupta

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda is recognized as foremost life science and describes ways to prevent and manage various disorders. The holistic approach of Ayurveda, treating the patient as a whole, meaning intervention targeted towards complete physical, Psychological and spiritual wellbeing makes this science a wonderful approach in the management of all kind of disorders. Sandhigata Vata is a common condition which can be correlated with Osteoarthritis. Owning to distracting nature and difficult management, Vatavyadhi has been included in Asht- mahagad. Sandhigata Vata is a type of Vatavyadhi which mainly occurs in Vriddhavastha due to Dhatu-kshaya, which limits daily routine activities, thus causing extreme discomfort to the patient. It being a Vatavyadhi, located in Marmasthisandhi and its occurrence in old age makes it Kashta-sadhya. Vata Dosha plays main role in the disease. Sandhigata Vata may be correlated with degenerative joint disease or Osteoarthritis, which in turn cripples the patient to the maximum, extends and reduces the total working capacity of the person. In modern science, analgesic, anti- inflammatory drugs, surgery or some physiotherapy are the options for the treatment of Osteoarthritis, they only subside the pain but do not cure. Traditional life science, Ayurveda, has most effective modalities of management in this aspect.
