Abstract

GASTRORETENTIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM-AN OVERVIEW

A. Rohit Kumar*, Arjun Sai Sreekar Aeila, Tirandi Manohara Sai

ABSTRACT

GRDDs are an approach to prolonging gastric residence by addressing local or systemic effects of site-specific drug release in the upper GIT. Gastro-retentive dosage forms (GRDFs) have been used with several effective medications for a very long time to improve therapy. GRDFs significantly improve stomach pharmacotherapy by releasing the medication locally, resulting in a high concentration of drug in the stomach mucosa that can be maintained over a longer period of time. GRDFs allow prolonged and continuous release of the drug to the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), significantly extending the duration of drug release and enhancing the bioavailability of drugs with a narrow therapeutic window, thus prolonging the dosage interval and increasing patient compliance. The aim of this paper is to explain briefly the distribution of gastro-retentive drugs (GRDD), GRDD-related factors, their drawbacks, and focus is put on their importance over traditional drug delivery.

Keywords: Floating dosage form, conventional drug delivery, Gastro-retentive drug delivery system, Pharmacotherapy.
