ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical, invitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of aqueous bark extracts of Bauhinia variegata and Ficus palmata. Phytochemical screening of the plants showed the confirmation of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and terpenoids. Antioxidant activity of B. variegata and F. palmata bark extracts was assessed by using DPPH & Ferric reducing power antioxidant capacity methods and the antioxidant activity increased in a concentration dependent manner. Antibacterial activity of plant extracts was carried out by using agar well diffusion method with bacterial isolates recovered from the urine sample of UTI patients. The aqueous extract of Bauhinia variegate showed remarkable activity against recovered isolates i.e. E. coli (28 mm), Staphylococcus (26 mm), Pseudomonas (28mm) than the F. palmata i.e. E. coli (17 mm), Staphylococcus (19 mm), Pseudomonas (22 mm). This study evaluated the presence of various secondary metabolites in the bark extracts of B.variegata and F.palmata, which may be responsible for antimicrobial and antioxidant efficacy of these medicinal plants.

Keywords: Phytochemical, Antioxidant, Bauhinia variegata, Ficus palmata & bark extract.
