ABSTRACT
Lipids are organic compounds that contain hydrocarbons, they are extracted from plants and animals by low polarity solvents. They are not appreciably soluble in water. In this review the attention is focused to give brief regarding lipids, formulation aspect, characterization, technique with special on various application. Lipids have recently become increasing demand as potential excipients for the novel drug delivery and in cosmetics also, Lipids used in pharmaceutical industries exhibit unique physical and chemical properties. Lipid composition, melting properties, crystalline structure and having ability to associate with water and other non-lipid molecules are especially important to their functional properties. The lipid are use in advanced lipid-based drug delivery systems (LBDDS) is a strategy to design pharmaceutical dosage forms with improved therapeutic benefits. Lipid-based Dosage forms are administered through many routes oral, Parentral, ocular, intranasal, dermal/transdermal, vaginal. There have been recent developments in pulmonary drug delivery. It has many more advantages in pharmaceutical field such as to increase the bioavailability, increase solubility, Lipids and lipophilic excipients can have a significant positive effect on the absorption of poorly soluble drugs after oral delivery. The digestion of lipids begins in the oral cavity on the tongue through exposure to lingual lipases, which are secreted by glands same as triglycerides.Lipid formulations can be classified as liquid lipidbased formulations, Solid lipid-based formulations, Lipid as particulate drug carriers, Lipid as cushioning agent for multiple unit pellet system (MUPS).
Keywords: lipid base drug delivery, Bioavailability, emulsifying agent, Multiple unit pellet system.
