ABSTRACT
West syndrome is an uncommon to rare epileptic syndrome that typically affects infants younger than 2 years of age. West syndrome is a constellation of symptoms characterized by epileptic/infantile spasms, abnormal brain wave patterns called hypsarrythmia and intellectual disability. A 5 year old male child was brought to Panchakarma OPD of JSS Ayurveda Hospital with a diagnosed case of West syndrome presenting with the cardinal features of Epilepsy associated with inability to stand and sit independently, unable to speak and no neck holding capacity. As per Ayurvedic classics, this condition can be correlated to Apasmara along with deprived growth
of the body (developmental delay and mental retardation). Patient was treated with the lines of Apasmara treatment as per Ayurveda with an intention of aiding faster recovery of the patient to lead a normal life. The choice of treatment here is Vatahara Santarpana Chikitsa which was achieved through Santarpana bahyaupakramas such as Shastika Shaali Pinda sweda, Shiropichu and Matrabasti. Along with these Panchakarma therapies, patient was administered Shamana oushadhis and was successfully treated.
