Abstract

ASHMARI: A CLASSICAL REVIEW

Dr. Shalini Patel* and Dr. Ajay Kumar Gupta

ABSTRACT

Ashmari has been known to humanity since time immemorial and is one of the most prevalent disease of the Mutravaha srotas. Ashmari has described in nearly all the Ayurvedic Samhitaas, but “Father of Surgery” Acharya Sushruta has described Ashmari in the most scientific manner with regard to its etiopathogenesis, classification, symptomatology, complications and management. Ashmari can be co-related with Urolithiasis, the third most common urinary tract disease exceeding UTI and BPH alone. Stone formation occurs in Ashmari‟s disease, which exerts serious pain as an enemy. It is therefore regarded to be one of the lethal illnesses of the „Ashtamahagada‟. There is one variation in which both the medicinal and the surgical procedures are recommended, among all the urinary ailments mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts, and that entity is Ashmari. It is obvious from the research of ancient texts that urological issues remain a very significant component of medical science. Currently, different forms of therapies are accessible but they are very costly and only available in higher centres, and it is not possible to avoid recurring stone formation even after surgical intervention. It is therefore essential to find out an economical, efficient, readily accessible and acceptable treatment of Ashmari.

Keywords: Ashmari, Urolithiasis, Ayurvedic, Chikitsa, Shastra karma.
