FIBRINOGEN CONCENTRATION IN DIABETIC PATIENTS ATTENDING CLINIC AT FEDERAL TEACHING HOSPITAL ABAKALIKI (FETHA).
Ogbuabor Bernice Nwakaego* and Obeagu Emmanuel Ifeanyi
ABSTRACT A total of 60 subjects, 30 diabetic patients (20 male and 10 female) and 30 apparently healthy non-diabetics (20 male and 10 female) between the age of 20 and 68 years, attending diabetic clinics at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA) who have suffered the disease for < 5 years and > 5 years were investigated. 30 apparently healthy non-diabetic subject was used as control. The fasting blood sugar (FBS) and fibrinogen concentration of both the diabetic and apparently healthy non-diabetic subjects were measured. The results showed increase mean value for FBS of diabetic subjects when compared with the control subjects 9.57 ± 6.96 and 3.93 ± 0.34 respectively. The fibrinogen concentration of diabetic subjects when compared to the control subjects show a statistically significant value (P<0.05): However, the study shows that fibrinogen concentration and sugar level of diabetic patient is affected.
