A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF GUGGULU KALPANA

ABSTRACT

Shastra means the science or the knowledge. Rasashastra mean the science or the knowledge which may teach to convert drug, irrespective of their nature (i.e. herbal mineral or animal) in rasa like from means in an absorbable from. The science which deals in detail about the preparation of different medicines is called as the Bhaisajya Kalpana. The Aushadha Kalpana (medicinal prepartions) is prepared by different pharmaceutical processing techniques applied to the crude drugs to get the desired therapeutic effect. This processing results in transformation of good pharmacological action to that of substance. The oleo –gum or the resin part of Guggulu (commiphora wightii Arn.) obtained from stem is the main part which is used. Before the administration of a drug, it has to be subjected with various types of „Samskaras’ so as to get the desired therapeutic effect. Among all these pharmaceutical processes Shodhana (purification) is one of them. In our text, for a single drug many process of Shodhana in different ways have been mentioned. One of the commonly used drugs of herbal origin is Guggulu (Commiphora wightii Arn.) which is mainly used as anti-inflammatory, anti-hyper lipidemic and cardio protective.
