Abstract

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS: A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Spondylosis refers to a degenerative condition of spine such as bone spurs and degenerating intervertebral discs between the vertebrae. These changes in the spine are frequently referred as osteoarthritis. Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative condition of cervical spine in which pain and stiffness are the common and primary symptoms. Sometimes, there may be referred pain in upper limb, in shoulder, or in chest. It is also known as neck arthritis that commonly seen in now a day. Though it is age related degeneration of vertebrae but its prevalence is increasing in early or middle aged group. In Ayurveda, it is co-related with Grivasandhigata vata or Manyasthambha. In the present case study, a female diagnosed with cervical spondylosis has been taken into consideration for its ayurvedic management. Patient had chief complaints of cervical pain, neck stiffness with restricted painful movements since 8 months, pain radiating to right upper limb and giddiness while bending upwards and downwards. Effect of griva basti (manya basti), oral medication along with agnikarma and nasya has been evaluated in this case study. Different parameters have been assessed before and after treatment. There was marked improvement in pain and increased range of restricted movements of neck shown significant improvement.
