OF ASHWAGANDHA IN PRIMARY INFERTILITY: A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

In Ayurveda four important factors are stated – Rutu, Kshetra, Ambu and Beeja for conception. The female factor is almost 50% responsible for conception. Female fertility depends on normal menstrual and ovulatory cycles, patent tubes and healthy cervix and uterus. Prevalence of infertility with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) varies upto 80 % and increasing day by day. It is now the primary cause of anovulation in reproductive age. A case with primary infertility with PCOS, having anovulatory cycles was treated with Ashwagandha with milk and followed for 3 months. After months of treatment she had regular monthly ovulatory cycles and later conceived. Ashwagandha has shukrala properties and acts on all sapta dhatus and their sarata. It helped in folliculogenesis and development of secretory endometrium. Patient was treated on basis of ayurvediya principles of Vaata dushti, Rasa rakta dushti and yonivyapaad Chikitsa.
