Abstract

DEVELOPMENT OF SHELF STABLE HERBAL MOUTHWASH FORMULATIONS BY EXPLOITATION OF RADIATION PRESERVATION TECHNOLOGY

Bhakti Mandke* and Milind Kumbhare

ABSTRACT

The aim of the current studies is to develop a shelf stable Herbal mouthwash formulation without any added chemical preservatives by exploiting the radiation preservation technology. In this study the Herbal mouthwash formulation was developed using 1-2% concentration of herbal ingredients treated with the gamma radiation dose of 15 kGy. The herbal ingredients used for mouthwash preparations were Pomegranate peels, Guava leaves and clove powder in sterile Distilled water as aqueous extract and 5% lemon juice extract. The mouthwash formulations were studied for their shelf life and antimicrobial efficacy against some bacteria such as S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, E. coli, B. pumilus and Lactic acid bacteria. The comparative studies of formulated mouthwash were also done with the two commercial mouthwashes available in the local market. The experimental results showed that there was no spoilage of mouthwash formulations prepared from irradiated ingredients for about six months when compared to mouthwash formulations prepared from non-irradiated ingredients which showed spoilage within 5 days due to fungal & bacterial growth. The herbal mouthwash formulation thus prepared also showed a better antimicrobial activity when compared with two widely used commercial mouthwashes available in the local market.

Keywords: Herbal mouthwash, irradiated, non-irradiated, shelf life, antimicrobial activity.
