ABSTRACT

Aims: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of the mini gastric bypass (MGB) in % excess weight loss (%EWL) and resolution of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in different age-groups at different durations of T2D. Materials and methods: This retrospective study recruited 229 patients both male and female who were treated by mini gastric bypass surgery in the past 6 years (2013-2018). Pre-operative demographics and anthropometric features including BMI, weight, excess weight loss (EWL), fasting glucose, HbA1c, C-peptide level, type of anti-diabetic treatment and follow-up information of 6 year was collected and recorded. Patients were grouped depending on duration of T2D (≤5years, 6 to 15 years and 16 to 25 years) and presence or absence of complications (retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy). Diabetes control and %EWL is compared from the pre operative values. Results: %EWL was found to be higher in younger age group and with ≤5 years of duration of diabetes. Marked improvement in HbA1C and c peptide levels depicted diabetic remission in majority of patients. Conclusion: MGB was found to be effective in both %EWL and improvement in diabetic status, thus leading to clinical resolution or improvement in T2D and its related complications.

Keywords: Excess weight loss, Type II Diabetes, mini gastric bypass surgery, obesity, Bariatric surgery.
