Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF LISNOPRIL HARD CANDY LOZENGES

Monali B. Parbhane*, Manoj S. Tare and Dwarkadas G. Baheti

ABSTRACT

Lozenges as oro-mucosal dosage forms were prepared, which offer significant therapeutic advantages over conventional dosage form. Hard Candy Lozenges were formulated by formulating the candy base by taking corn syrup to Sucrose ratio (50:50). Six formulations were developed with varying concentration of permeation enhancer. The purpose of present study was to develop a cost effective & pharmaceutically good behaving formulation for lisinopril as in the form of Lozenges by focusing the main objective of the study to improve the oral bioavailability of lisinopril. Preformulation studies were performed to study the physicochemical properties of lisinopril & drug – excipients compatibility to know physical changes between drug & excipients, if any occurs while developing a prototype formula. All batches vary in the concentration of Mannitol which was used as a permeation enhancer. Formulation L1 & L2 showed better drug release but both formulations had a cooling defect. The optimized batch selected showed better drug release (97.98%) of lisinopril. Lozenges not only have the cost effective production process but also having a better patient compliance. From above study, one can conclude that the lozenges are the better dosage form for lisinopril.

Keywords: Lozenges, Lisinopril, Mannitol.
