GRAFTING OF CELLULOSIC FABRIC USING PVP WITH MGO NANOPARTICLES FOR IMPROVE PERFORMANCE OF BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL PATHOGENS
Kalimuthan Ramanujam and Mahalingam Sundrarajan*
ABSTRACT Grafting of cellulose fabric was carried out using the eco-friendly Poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer by pad- dry- cure method. The Polymer solutions were cross linked with cotton fabric using citric acid as cross linker. Simple and cost effective synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method. Face centre cubic phase of (MgO) nanoparticles using starch as a stabilizing agent. The hydroxide precipitates at room temperature followed by calcinations at 450ºC. MgO nanoparticles was synthesized and characterized by XRD. The modification effects of crosslinking and nanoparticles treated cotton fabrics were studied by FTIR and SEM with EDX analysis. TEM, DLS analysis of average particles size were confirmed. Antibacterial and antifungal activity was evaluated by agar diffusion method against S.aureus (gram positive) and E.coli (gram negative) bacterial pathogens and C.albicans (gram positive) and A.niger (gram negative) fungal strains respectively. The improved antibacterial efficiency needed for kid’s cloths, inner wears, medical bandage cloths. Keywords: Cellulosic, MgO, Nanoparticles, Poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, Antimicrobial activity.
