Abstract

IN-VITRO ANTIOXIDANT AND DOPAMINERGIC ACTIVITY OF ALKALOIDS ISOLATED FROM MURRAYA KOENIGII LEAVES

Rupali A. Patil* and Yogesh A. Hiray

ABSTRACT

Murraya koenigii (Family: Rutaceae) called curry leaf, is a small, tropical to sub-tropical tree or shrub that typically grows to 6-15' tall and is noted for its pungent, aromatic, curry leaves which are an important flavoring used in Indian/Asian cuisine. This tree is native to moist forests in India and Sri Lanka. Curry leaves are a richest source of carbazole alkaloids which possesses various biological activities such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory. The objective of present study was to explore the potential of M. koenigii through the use of behavioral model of dopaminergic activity in mice. In vitro antioxidant activity was determined using stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl, 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging method. Total antioxidant activity was also determined. Total Phenol Content was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteau method. Effect on haloperidol-induced catalepsy and clonidine-induced hypothermia was determined in Swiss albino mice. This study concludes that M. koenigii leaves demonstrated promising protective activity in haloperidol-induced catalepsy and clonidine-induced hypothermia.

Keywords: alkaloids, clonidine, dopaminergic, Murraya koenigii.
