Abstract

CYTOTOXIC AND WOUND HEALING POTENTIAL OF DMSO EXTRACTS OF PROPOLIS IN MDA-MB-231 CELLS

Meltem Uçar*

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate cytotoxic and wound healing effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of Turkish propolis in MDA-MB-231 cancer cells. For the study of cytotoxic and wound healing effects of propolis extracts, trypan blue exclusion and motility index assays were used in MDA-MB-231 cells for 24, 48 and 72hours. Cell viabilty of MDA-MB-231 cells that were incubated with DMSO extracts of propolis at 25, 12.5 and 6.25 μg/mL concentrations and DMSO solutions was detected between 96.04 ± 2.23 and 99.84 ± 0.13. Motility index of MDA-MB-231 cells that were incubated with DMSO extracts of propolis at 25 μg/mL was found to be 0.35 ± 0.03, 0.61 ± 0.03 and 0.86 ± 0.03 for 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. When we compared cell viability and motility index values of control and propolis-treated MDA-MB-231 cells by Student t test, results were not significantly different for each other. It was concluded that cytotoxic and wound healing effects of DMSO extracts of Turkish propolis at different concentrations were not effective for anti-metastatic activity in MDA-MB-231 cancer cells. Different extracts of propolis with different concentrations can be investigated to evaluate its cytotoxic and wound healing effects in cancer cells.
