AN UNDERSTANDING OF VARICOSE VEINS IN AYURVEDA

ABSTRACT

The most fundamental human characteristic- walking upright or standing erect is contemplated as a blessing, but it also has a penalty to pay in the form of varicosity. The blood has to flow from the lower limb into the heart against gravity because of the upright position of human beings. About 10 -12% of the general population develop varicose vein of lower limbs. Varicose veins are managed with conservative treatment, sclerotherapy, surgical intervention etc. which have their own drawbacks. A comprehensive holistic natural management which aims at correcting the core pathology and preventing the prognosis is the need of the hour. Hence it is essential to understand varicose veins in Ayurveda and designate the most apt treatment for it.
